I'm Sorry!
I don’t post as often on Yellow Sheep as I do on Tarif.tumblr  This has been going on for some time but I will try to fix that.  That’s it.

Tumbleroo? We're Not There Yet iPad Tumblrers
First off, good thing that the Tumblr apps are beginning to roll out. It’s about time. So I was super excited when I saw that this came out but I gotta say I’m really disappointed with it so far. Also, this is a long-ish review, but bear with it if Tumblr is part of your everyday experience.  Until now we’ve been using Tumblr on the iPad through Safari or other browsers and...

Speaking of Sheep
Designer Jean-Luc Cornec took old rotary phones (which I love, by the way) and made sheep of them.  As in like that: Ha! The funny thing are the heads. Those phones actually do look like sheep.  It was an exhibition in the Frankfurt Museum of Telecommunication. (Does anybody know where they are now?) P.S. I realized that this was a big thing on the interwebs a while back, but who cares. I...

Couch Me If You Can
Wow! If I were the sole decision maker in our little household, this brilliant piece of “furniture” design would have been sitting in my living room as we speak. They also have this in love seat size. (I wonder if I could convince wifey to have one in our studio?) Thank you those responsible at Eastpak and Quinze & Milan design studio. Gallery here. Found in High Snobiety.

Why?
This was the Frigidaire logo: Someone thought “Nah. I want to change it. It’s not good” Then they made this: Three shoutouts: To the executive who decided to change the old logo: If I were running the world, you would now be fired.  To the designer who was asked to redesign one of the best type logos of all-time: How do you sleep at night? To Frigidaire marketing...

Lightbulb Encore
Given my lightbulb obsession, I was very pleased with this. It’s called the What Watt?** and was designed by London designer Tim Fishlock. It’s beautiful and it’s made of 1243 suspended lightbulbs and, according to him, it’s  ”a memorial to and a celebration of the humble incandescent lightbulb.” Brilliant and simple (peh!) idea and very nicely executed. Tommy...

Art at Its Best
Over the period of five years in the eighties, American artist Clayton Lewis (1915-1995) sent his mother a thousand letters while she was living her last years away from him in assisted care. He couldn’t do much for her apart from sending those letters every few days so he made each and every envelope he sent a work of art.  I think this is one of the most beautiful, touching, whimsical,...

Product Design: Coat Rack
Coat rack. Very clean design. The materials are genius. I think it needs a spacious and airy place to really work, although I wouldn’t mind getting one.  by a Lithuanian designer called Vytautas Gecas (cool name!) Via DailyTonic

Book Covers #1
The word obsession is pierced into the paper by a pin. BRILLIANT. Book cover by Lauren Nassef. Design by Isaac Tobin. He’s a very good designer and she’s a very good illustrator. (Their websites are so similar because they’re married).  (oh, and she has the same last name as my mom. not that this usually affects my taste in designers)

Tarif on Paper (my new illustration blog) So I tried to keep this blog (YS) true to its original intention; which is to share things, thoughts, moments, works, etc., that have inspired me or got stuck in my head long enough to make it here. And to do that I had to keep my own work out of it, but it is still something that I want to share and in a way it is the other side of whatever it is that...

Second-Least Expensive Wine Theorye
The theory actually belongs to a friend of mine. This goes out to him. (And to all those who don’t have a clue which wine to order.) The rest of the list is brilliant. (I wonder if we’d prefer to have just a few famous wines that are available in most places so that we just know what each tastes like and whether or not we like it? kinda like beer. Have a few...

Yellow Scenes: Barcelona #1
I fully understand his impulse to sit on the sidewalk and draw this (as I’m sure he would understand mine to take a picture of him doing it).  Also, such a nice car!

Yellow Scenes: Photography
I am not really into photography (i.e. I had the impulse to buy a DSLR and “get into it” only once in my life), but every now and then I’d take a picture with my trusted little IXUS that doesn’t involve me or anyone I know, and feel a little bit like a photographer. Just a little bit.  So now I figured: what the hell. I’ll just put some of these up here because,...

Yellow Branding: New York Public Library
Identity re-designs are the coolest thing. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it’s because we have this little obsession with before-and-afters and makeovers, and we like to judge things in a comparison rather than standalone. It’s easier to say that something is uglier or nicer without having to dig around or explain too much about why we think that versus if we make the...

Fork/Knife By an unknown designer but it’s someone who Emma (of emmas designblogg) knows. I couldn’t tell more because the posts were still in Swedish back then and Google Translate is a lousy translator (Shhh… pretend I didn’t say that) so this is all I got. Pretty neat if you’re used to eating with one hand while holding a book or working on a computer with the...

VOILE Spaghetti Measure. If you’ve ever cooked a whole bag of spaghetti because you were afraid to have too little, you’ll appreciate this one. It’s not a new invention by any means, but leave to Alessi to take something ordinary and mundane and turn it into something you’d hang on a wall (if it weren’t so damn useful). (and while we’re on the subject of...

Yellow Things: Here, Function IS Form (and both...
These are a few products that (almost annoyingly) seem so simple to design but are some of the most brilliant things that I’ve come across recently. I love them all and I want them all. No particular order. Keybrid. It’s a blank key that you get and cut to replicate any of your existing keys and the key itself is a ring. Minimalism at its best. By the amazing Scott Amron of Amron...

Yellow Interiors: Lightbulbs
I’ve been somewhat obsessed with lightbulbs recently. Aren’t they a thing of beauty? I’ve been trying to find a way to use uncovered lightbulbs dangling from wires  as a light source in the house. I have a  couple of ideas although they have yet to materialize. I had no illusions of innovation or exclusivity, in other words I knew that probably tons of people have done...

Yellow Ads: Why Waste All the Paint?
A very clever outdoor ad for paint manufacturers RONA in Montreal, Canada. The copy says: “We recycle the remainder of the paint.” I guess as opposed to Apple who just let it drip away from their iPods. Funny. If anyone knows the agency behind this please share. Some details here (in French) and a 24-second time-lapse video of them putting it up here. via Hello Bauldoff.

Yellow Thoughts: John Coltrane and Musical...
I’m no expert on jazz by any means but I think I can safely make the following statement: If you’re looking for an introduction to John Coltrane’s music, or for that matter, to jazz in general; my recommendation is to start with Central Park West from his 1964 album Coltrane’s Sound. Actually I would also very highly recommend Lonnie’s Lament from his 1964 album...

Yellow Print: Isn't Letterpress the Most Beautiful...
Just look at that. Apart from the brilliant design, doesn’t the prospect of feeling that grainy paper and the pressed drawing on it make you wanna jump across the screen and grab it? Also below is a nice letterpress calendar from the impressive Studio on Fire. The fact that a lot of the art is so nice adds a bonus mini-poster after the year is over. Check out the full  calendar here...

Yellow Things: Angel and Demon S & P
Salt and pepper shakers by Russian product designer Yar Rassadin. He hasn’t got many nice things, but the nice ones are pretty awesome. If you can read German and have 16 Euros to spare, you can get them from Koziol.

Yellow Thoughts: Royalty my Ass
I don’t care who you are, NObody should have a lawn this big unless they worked their asses off to get it (or at least one of their parents did or something). I don’t believe in birthright lawns. (My shoes at Château Versailles)

Yellow Ads: Passport Stamps
Ad for the Brazilian travel magazine Viaje Mais. Agency: Longplay of Brazil. Likes: the concept, the execution of the Statue, the passport texture and lighting, and the overall layout. Dislikes: the copy (written content) and font on the right, the fact that some stamps are repeated (why? if you’ve gone through all the trouble to get all these stamps, at least try and photoshop different...

Yellow Thoughts: Coffee
That’s a cup of coffee in Barcelona. The interesting thing about coffee in Barcelona is that it is quite difficult to find a cup of coffee short of spectacular. Different places, different brands, different times of day, didn’t matter one bit. These people know how to make coffee. As for Paris, a long series of overpriced crap. Twice the price of Barcelona’s coffee and just...
